Our Peregian Beach house extension project for @rippconstruction was something special. What started off as an ordinary new extension turned up the magic level as the project progressed. What we have is a one of a kind. Read on... Finished photos at the end.
Collaboration, Exploration, New Heights.
After framing stage the decision was made by the client to utilise VJ panelled walls throughout the entire home. A bold move! All walls inside the home to be VJ.
Furthermore the desired result was as close to a neutral white as we can get! Which means no tint in our paint, otherwise referred to as Dulux Vivid White - The colour of Dulux paint leaving the factory. When tint is foregone, coverage drops and we often have to do an extra coat to achieve full opacity with our finish. To ramp up the challenge the VJ panels have grooves which require careful sanding and attention to smooth out and allow paint to fill completely. To create a premium internal finish, we have our work cut out for us.
This wasn't enough of a challenge for us, we had an idea. One that would push the difficulty of this job to new heights, ramp up the risk, and if it worked would turn this project into a show stopper and a one of a kind feature project.
Rather than using ordinary wall paint in a low sheen finish on the walls. Why don't we use a satin finish kitchen grade paint? The client was on board, and with a twinkle in our eyes we set to create a true masterpiece.
Careful execution was absolutely critical, and tight deadlines meant long days. Thankfully our good friend Aaron from Fine + Fast Finishes has a slow down waiting for plasterwork to be finalised on his project and he hopped on board with us.
2 coats of primer, hours of gap filling, days worth of dustless machine sanding using the best Mirka and Festool Sanders, and 3 coats of topcoat later. We had our finished result.
And we were blown away.
A silky smooth, chemically resistant, hard wearing, waterborne, eco-friendly and healthy kitchen paint applied to all the VJ in the home. All spray finished. Seamless. Trim, Doors, Walls.
We discovered this Sayerlack product back in 2018 when we joined a top refinishing forum in New York. We found a distrubtor here in Australia - 22 Chroma and have since used it on numerous projects. As well as introduced it to the Australian Painting community on Aussie Painters Network. Other painters have followed our lead.
With Aaron from Fast Fine Finishes preferring Festool sanders, and our preference being in the Mirka camp we have found joy in comparing the two brands and setting them up on challenges head to head. Follow us on instagram to see more on this topic as well as fine finishes in general.
This Cordia project will be our first ever entry into Master Painters Australia Awards.
